[:it]La Rum Farm è una fattoria situata nella valle del Wadi Rum in Giordania, vicino al confine con l’Arabia Saudita. E’ stata fondata nel 1986 e si estende per circa 2000 ettari di terreno nel bel mezzo del deserto.
Più nello specifico questa valle è chiamata “Valle della Luna” ed è una zona molto arida, con pochissime precipitazioni annuali e rada vegetazione.
Zone di sabbia rossa si alternano a montagne di granito ed arenaria, con gole, caverne, archi naturali…tutto si direbbe tranne che sia una terra fertile in cui poter produrre e coltivare qualcosa. Eppure le regioni desertiche di Israele e Giordania sono da anni oggetto di numerosi progetti agricoli, quindi con il coinvolgimento di alcuni beduini locali anche qui sono iniziate delle attività che iniziano ad avere successo.
Si è infatti scoperto che sotto il deserto del Wadi Rum vi è una grande falda acquifera e che garantisce gran parte dell’approvvigionamento idrico di tutta la nazione. L’acqua viene quindi presa dalla falda sotterranea, a 30-400 metri di profondità e irriga 78 ettari di campi circolari, una tecnica che funziona molto bene.
Rum Farm è oggi una fattoria specializzata nella coltivazione di prodotti come ortaggi, cereali e foraggio, melanzane, cavoli, fichi e melograni, patate, zucca, pomodori. Le colture vengono coltivate utilizzando tecniche speciali di irrigazione e un metodo che si dice essere in uso fin dai tempi antichi dagli Egizi e i Nabatei.[:en]Rum Farm is a farm located in the Wadi Rum valley in Jordan, near the border with Saudi Arabia. More specifically, this valley is called the “Valley of the Moon” and is a very arid area, with very little annual rainfall and sparse vegetation.
Red sand areas alternate with granite and sandstone mountains, with gorges, caves, natural arches … everything would be said except that it is a fertile land where you can produce and cultivate something. Yet the desert regions of Israel and Jordan have been the subject of numerous agricultural projects for years, so with the involvement of some local Bedouins, activities have begun here that are starting to be successful.
In fact, it has been discovered that under the Wadi Rum desert there is a large aquifer and which guarantees a large part of the water supply for the whole nation. The water is then taken from the underground aquifer, 30-400 meters deep and irrigates 78 hectares of circular fields, a technique that works very well.
Rum Farm is today a farm specialized in the cultivation of products such as vegetables, cereals and forage, aubergines, cabbage, figs and pomegranates, potatoes, squash, tomatoes. The crops are grown using special irrigation techniques and a method that is said to have been in use since ancient times by the Egyptians and the Nabataeans.[:]
